First there was a contentious first act, before the world number 1 stepped up and dropped the game on Sunday March 17, in the WTA 1000 final in Indian Wells, Iga Swiatek left little hope for her opponent, Maria Sakkara of Greece. The Pole won in two sets, at the end of the match that lasted a little over an hour, and the second set of only twenty-five minutes (6-4, 6-0).

Maria Sakkari, the 9th tennis player in the world, still held on for a while. Trailing 3 games to 0 from the start of the match, it’s back to 4 games across the board, indicating a longer battle. That was without counting the reigning champion’s acceleration, well aided by her serve, which closed out the first set before allowing her opponent just five small points in the second.

In this week in California, she did not lose a single set, defeating Marta Kostjuk (6-2, 6-1) or Yulija Putintseva (6-1, 6-0) in the semifinals. The Pole thus won the Californian tournament for the second time, after the 2022 edition, already winning against Sakkari. This is her 19th trophy, eighth at the WTA 1000 level.
