This unique exhibition brings together twenty paintings taken from Notre-Dame after the fire. Among them are Maya, and very large-format paintings from the 17th century. These large restored decorations are on display from this Wednesday, April 24, at the Mobilier national in Paris, before returning to the cathedral next December.
Spared from the fire, after two years of renovation, they returned to all their glory. “This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see all the decorative masterpieces of the cathedral in one place and at close range. All these paintings will return to the cathedral, but they will be distributed among the chapels and placed by height, i.e. we will no longer see them as that we can see them side by side in this exhibition. It is truly a meeting of masterpieces. explains Emmanuel Penicault, curator of the exhibition.
25 meter carpet
Another masterpiece to admire : carpet for the choir of the cathedral offered by Louis Philippe. Only the upper half is presented, already restored, explains the president of Mobilier National, Hervé Lemoine. “It was a significant restoration work, this carpet is gigantic, it is more than 25 meters long and 9 meters wide.”
“When he left the cathedral wet, he weighed almost 2.5 tons in my opinion, he had to dry himself,” recalls Hervé Lemoine. “It was an extremely important work and we are very happy that it has been restored and will eventually be re-installed in the cathedral.”, rejoices the president of Mobilier national. Reinstallation of all these works in the cathedral is planned for autumn.
