Château de Saumur is an ancient fortress that dominates and is reflected in the Loire. It houses two museums and a revolutionary double staircase, like the one found in Chambord.

It draws eyes for miles around, yet it is one of the most confidential châteaux of the Loire. Among them, Château de Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) is the only one built in the Middle Ages, and its opulent Gothic style even inspired Walt Disney’s animated films. To better admire it, nothing beats a trip to the Loire.

120,000 visitors last year

“Château de Saumur is the last example of medieval princely architecture”, explains Estelle Géraud, curator. Its history begins in the 10th century, but it takes a big turn in the 14th century. “The Duke of Anjou will want to build a splendid palace”, continues Estelle Géraud. In 1906, the town hall of Saumur bought the castle in order to restore it and set up a museum. 35,000 pieces are exhibited there. Last year, the castle received 120,000 visitors, 9 times less than the Chambord castle. It also has its own vineyards.
