It is eternal. With experience, Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) won the women’s Amstel Gold Race on Sunday 14 April. The Dutch woman stole the victory in the bicycle throw from her compatriot Lorena Wiebes, guilty of celebrating too soon, with her handlebars lowered and her fingers pointing to the sky. Disconsolate after the finish, the SD-Worx team sprinter quickly realized that this photo finish would end up in the pantheon of the most brutal moments in the history of her sport.
For Vos, this is the second bouquet in this classic and the third victory of the season, after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and A Travers la Flandre. Born in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, she achieved her 251st professional success thanks to her patience and tactical sense.
Neutralized and shortened race
The best sprinters were still in the game in the last leg as the race was shortened. First neutralized an hour after the accident involving a policeman on a motorcycle, he continued only for the last 50 kilometers with a grouped peloton. Only three of the four planned laps on the final lap were completed.
