An Iranian court has sentenced to death a famous Iranian rapper who was imprisoned for more than a year and a half for supporting the 2022 protest movement that was launched after the death of Mahsa Amini, local media reported on Wednesday (April 24th).

Revolutionary Court in Isfahan (…) sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death for corruption on Earth“, is one of the most serious charges in Iran, said the singer’s lawyer Amir Raisian, as reported by the daily Shargh.

Nine people executed

The 33-year-old rapper was arrested in October 2022. With songs and on social media, he supported the protest movement launched after the death on September 16, 2022 of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurd who was arrested by Iran’s moral police, who accused him of violating strict rules clothing for women. He was then supported by foreign artists, fearing that he would be sentenced to death.

Several hundred people, including members of the security forces, were killed and thousands arrested during protests in October and November 2022 in Iran, before disappearing. Nine people were executed in connection with this uprising, according to non-governmental organizations.
