Harvey Weinstein case: New York appeals court overturns 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction against former producer

This is one of the most emblematic trials of the #MeToo movement. In a decision handed down on Thursday, April 25, a New York appeals court overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 conviction for rape and sexual assault by a New York court. The former film producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The Court of Appeal found that procedural errors were committed during this trial and ordered a new trial. Testimonies related to acts that were not committed against the applicant were especially accepted “wrong”, according to one of the judges of the appeal court. However, these testimonies had “paints a very damaging picture” the accused.

“The solution to these shocking errors is a new trial”, this judge ordered. In addition to this conviction in New York, the former Hollywood producer, aged 72, was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023 for rape in a court in Los Angeles. Revelations about his Sexually predatory behavior was the source of the #MeToo movement.
